Class Analysis and Crime Scene

Footprint Analysis

Worked with Erika and Sara

The purpose for the analysis of footprints was to see if you could successfully fill out an  analysis sheet and identify footprints.
Our class was split into groups of 3/4 and presented with a rectangular container of dirt.

Each person in the group takes a turn making their impression with their shoe on the dirt. Then we would take a field analysis sheet and fill it out with the specifics of weather, type of soil, and of course the details of the shoe.

Questions:
1. What was you analysis of each print?

  • The first print was a boot with a small heel.
  • The shoes looked like they were worn often because they had no specific markings.
  • Most likely female.
  • About a size eight.

  • The second print was a boot with a short squared heel.
  • The shoes looked like they were worn often because they had no specific markings.
  • Most likely female
  • About a size nine

  • The third print was a flat
  • Seems like they were not worn often because there was a distinct swirl/line pattern between ball and heel of shoe.
  • Most likely female
  • About a size eight

2. What are some similarities and differences of each shoe type observed?

The flat shoe did not have an arch and the pressure though out the print. Unlike the boots where the pressure was more on the ball and heel of the foot.

The boot with the short heel had a little higher arch than the flat. The pressure was more on the ball and heel.

The boot with the squared heel had a very high arch, where the other shoe prints were fairly low. There is a definite separation of heel and ball of foot. Most of the pressure was put into the heel of the shoe because it is deeper in the dirt.

3. What are some similarities and differences of male and female shoes?

Male and Female shoes are similar in shape and sometimes size. But, generally male shoes dimensions are larger than female shoes. Female shoes also seem to be more rounded or pointed while male shoes are more squared.

Lip Print Analysis

Worked with Erika and Sara

In class each person put down a lip print on an index car and had to identify and label any distinguishing characteristics about their own lips.

Then the class split up into groups of three or four and each person has to lay down another print on the same sheet of white paper in the same orientation. The sheet with all the group member's lip prints is then passed to another group along with the index cards of each persons individual analysis. The group will then write the defining features they can identify on the white sheet and try to match each print to one of the prints on the index card.

Create a Profile Activity

Worked with Erika and Sara

Each group was supplied with five clues that could be used to analyze the crime scene using a magnifying glass and a microscope.
1. Analyze the Clues

Clue 1: Fingerprints
1= plain whorl
2= ulnar loop
3= ulnar loop
4= ulnar loop

Clue 2: Long Hair Sample
- Possible colored red hair
- Caucasian

Clue 3:  Note
- "You will never find her"
-Victim is Female
- She was abducted

Clue 4: Small Hair Sample
- Coarse short hair
- Starts dark brown/black then turns red
- Could be a piece of hair that shows the original color of and dyed color of the longer sample.

Clue 5: Possible Bloodstain
- Smeared stain
- Could be blood, juice, or lipstick/gloss
- Red/pink color

2. What do you know? What needs further testing? What don’t you know?

We know that there were 4 finger prints at the crime scene, 3 ulnar loop and 1 plain whorl. There is long Caucasian human hair. A ransom letter written by the perpetrator. A short human hair, possibly an eyebrow or eyelash hair Finally we have a possible blood stain. Farther testing on the long hair to see whether it was dyed or not and testing on the smear to tell us whether it was a bloodstain/ lipstick stain.
3. Create a profile

The perpetrator broke into a redhead woman's house. The perpetrator grabs her shirt so a few of her hairs get ripped and fall to the floor. Then she hits the perpetrator about the face causing an eyebrow/eyelash hair to fall out. The perpetrator shoves her away into a wall, causing the perpetrator to scratch the woman. The woman as she falls tries to block her fall causing her to leave her prints and a blood stain behind from her scratch. The fall into the wall knocks her out. The perpetrator writes a ransom letter and kidnaps the woman.

4. How could the case be solved?

By getting a professional forensic team together and getting them to test every piece of evidence. Especially focusing on the ransom letter for a handwriting analysis test because it is the only one that is known from the perpetrator.

Witness Identification Experiment

Worked with Darcell

The purpose of this experiment was to see if you or another person would make a good witness.

1. First each person in the group cut out a face from a magazine (the faces should be about the same size)

2. cut the face into major facial features (eyes, mouth, nose, etc.)and mix them all together

3. Each person should make a face from the features in the pile and take ten seconds to try and memorize them.

4. Put the chosen facial features back in the pile and try to reconstruct the face that your group member showed you.

Poisons

Poison is substance that, when introduced into or absorbed by a living organism, causes death or injury, esp. one that kills by rapid action.

In class we conducted an analysis of unspecified "poisons" around the room in groups of 4.

Ginger Snaps is a red headed caucasian female who bartends at a local club (1). But bartenders don't make much and Ginger decided to make a business deal with Candi Stores an Entertainer who has had a drug convition. Ginger would sell drugs to men at the bar while Candi would entertain to keep the boss busy. One night Candi decided she wasnt making enough money to support herself. So she came over to the bar for a mixed drink (4,5) and  threatened Ginger that if she didnt get more money than last week that she would do something to Ginger. Ginger was scared and handed Candi her gold chain , so that Candi could pawn it for money. But, Ginger knew the necklace was a fake. So all night she tried to slip people at the bar this note saying "Please help me" (7). But, the people kept turning away before she could get it to them. The bar had closed and Ginger stayed behind as always to clean and prep the bar for the next day. Candi storms in very angry because she had made a ffool out of herself at the pawn shop. The two girls fought, Candi waving a knife and Ginger trying to stay alive. Pieces of their clothing were torn away (6,8) and eventually Candi over powered Ginger. Candi slit Ginger's throat and let her bleed out on the bar. Ginger's blood (2) and their fingerprints were left everywhere (3,10,11). Candi left a note that said "I needed the money" (7a) and fled town.
